Derek Thomas is EPIC’s Chief Strategy Officer, a Managing Partner of EPIC Specialty Program and Investments (ESPI) and a member of the Executive Committee. Since joining the firm, he has driven the advancement of EPIC’s national expansion strategy to include regional platform acquisitions, omni-channel organic growth, development and scaling of EPIC’s specialty practices, the launch of new products, programs, distribution platforms and recruitment of business experts from a diverse group of disciplines to support the firm’s strategic initiatives.

Derek is an industry veteran with over 30 years of strategic and operational leadership in the underwriting, retail brokerage, affinity, program and MGA segments of the insurance industry, with additional background in the technology and e-commerce sectors.  His expertise includes strategic planning; managing multi-million dollar business units; leading performance improvement project teams, operational functions (sales, marketing, and distribution management). Clients managed include the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Business Insurance Trust, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Business Insurance Trust, the American Federation of Teachers, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and WebMD, to name a few. Prior to joining EPIC, Derek held leadership positions with the Aon Corporation, the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies and GMAC Insurance.

Derek has a MSW in Administration, Policy Development & Planning and a BA in Political Science & History from Rutgers University.  He has successfully completed the Harvard Business School – Finance for Senior Executives Program, the Insurance Executive Development Program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, the Strategic Marketing Program at the University of Chicago, the Chubb School of Insurance and various sales leadership programs.  He is certified in Strategic Planning, Project Management, the Balanced Scorecard and the Myers Briggs Type Indicator.
