We’re now several weeks into some form of shelter-in-place routine and adjusting to this “new normal” has been frustrating, even overwhelming, for a lot of people. My colleague, Amanda, pointed out recently in her blog on supporting emotional health that many people are experiencing stress and anxiety from social isolation.

Viewpoints from Ayana Collins

A lot of us find it hard to cope without the human connections we constantly rely on, so it’s important to be intentional and find creative ways to stay connected with the world during these challenging times. Recognize that your employees need support, and share ideas to help your team stay in touch and reduce anxiety:

Do Frequent Self-Check-Ins

Take a personal “time out” and assess how you’re feeling (it’s okay to feel negative emotions and take positive actions). Vent to someone you trust – talking out loud can help you feel better, and journaling works as well.

Volunteer

Help a vulnerable neighbor out by delivering supplies/food or assist local food banks and schools with delivering meals.

Get Some Fresh Air

Take a break from your work and go for a stroll or stand outside. Safe sun exposure has many benefits, including lowering blood pressure.

Reconnect with Friends

Now is a great time to reach out to friends you haven’t spoken to or seen in a while. A short conversation to let each other know that you care should boost your mood.

Engage Virtually

Your favorite artists and DJs are hosting watch parties – join the fun and dance and sing the stress away.

The EPIC Wellness & Health Management practice will continue to share ways to support the social, physical and community wellbeing of your workforce in the new normal. EPIC also has a dedicated coronavirus webpage with links to additional employer resources for employee benefits and risk management. Stay tuned for more from us, take care, and stay well!
